Newcastle United were thrashed 5-1 in a pre-season friendly by local rivals Middlesbrough on Tuesday. And both sides finished with 10 men, as Toon skipper Jamaal Laselles and ‘Boro midfielder Lewis Wing were sent off after an off-the-ball skirmish.
Britt Assombalonga scored twice for Neil Warnock’s men to hand them a 2-0 first-half lead. Winger Marcus Tavernier then smashed home from the edge of the penalty to make it 3-0 before Allan Saint-Maximin reduced the arrears for the Magpies.
In the second period, after both had been reduced to 10 men, Grant Hall and a Stephen Walker penalty ensured a comfortable victory for the Championship side.
