New Covid strains ‘very unlikely’ to stop return to normality this summer, expert says

A top scientist has said mutant strains of coronavirus are "very unlikely" to stop the UK having a normal summer. Head of Covid-19 Genomics UK scientific body Professor Sharon Peacock said she was "optimistic" the vaccine would continue to be rolled out so the Government can avoid another lockdown.

She said tweaking vaccines will allow the country to "stay ahead" of coronavirus strains. Matt Hancock painted a positive picture on Friday regarding the state of coronavirus infections in the England on Friday, with the average number of cases - 6,685 per day - at their lowest rate since late September.
