Neighbours pay tribute as woman dies in house fire despite heroic efforts of '20 who tried to rescue her'

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Haveley Road in Benchill on Friday evening. A number of people attempted to break into the property after it went up in flames.

The victim, a woman in her 80s, named locally as Eileen, did not survive. One neighbour, who asked not to be named, described her as a 'well-known, lovely lady'.

He said: "I heard a commotion outside and when I looked out I could see flames and smoke coming from the house. "The windows had blown and people were trying to get inside. "I went out to help - there must have been around 20 people trying to get in. "W
