Russian known for her fierce criticism of Vladimir Putin was brutally murdered in a lift as she clutched at her groceries on the way back from going to the shop – and 16 years after the brutal killing, mystery still surrounds her death.

Anna Politkovskaya’s bloodied corpse was found slumped in the elevator after she was shot four times in the brutal close-range attack on October 7, 2006.The journalist had made several powerful enemies throughout the Russian state through her stories writing about high-level corruption and atrocities committed during the war in Chechnya.READ MORE: Russian TV predicts nuclear 'Armageddon' as Putin ships more missiles from Siberia As well as criticising the tyrannical Russian dictator she also called out infamous warlord Ramzan Kadyrov, who recently declared himself “the West’s biggest bogey man” after calling on his pal Putin to “finish” Ukraine with nuclear weapons.

Heroic Anna had carried on calling out cruel leaders in the face of multiple death threats and even a terrifying hostage situation in 2001 where brutes in the Russian military captured her and taunted her with a mock execution before eventually releasing her.In 2004, Anna survived a poisoning attempt whilst she was on a plane.But her enemies finally caught up to her at her central Moscow home where she died from the impact of the bullets.It sparked international outrage and there were six arrests including the gunman and a policeman involved in supplying the murder weapon – but authorities never convicted the person who ordered the suspected contract killing.Vladimir Putin himself was met with chants of “murderer” from crowds in Germany following the death, but insisted he had nothing to do with it.
