ByteDance to court, claiming that it recommended a 'blackout' choking challenge to her daughter which ultimately led to her death.Tawainna Anderson is suing TikTok for 'product liability and negligence', after the death of her 10-year-old daughter, Nylah, who attempted a viral 'Blackout Challenge' which encourages people to choke themselves until they pass out then attempt to regain consciousness on camera.Tawainna reportedly found Nylah unresponsive and took her to hospital, where she spent five days in intensive care before dying of her injuries on December 12, 2021.Nylah's mother claims that TikTok tailored the 'Blackout Challenge' to her daughter using its personalisation algorithms, and is "programming children for the sake of corporate profits and promoting addiction."TikTok has been approached for comment and this article will be updated with any further information.

It seems that the app has clamped down on the viral dare, as '#blackoutchallenge' now yields no search results on the platform. When the news first broke about Nylah's death in December, a TikTok spokesperson told the New York Post: "This disturbing 'challenge' which people seem to learn about from sources other than TikTok, long predates our platform and has never been a TikTok trend."Court documents state Nylah was an "active, happy, healthy, and incredibly intelligent child" who could speak three languages. In December, a distraught Tawainna told ABC 7: “Make sure you check your kids’ phones.“You never know what you might find on their phones.

You wouldn’t think 10-year-olds would try this. They’re trying because they’re kids and they don’t know better.”Nylah is not the only child to die participating in the so-called 'blackout challenge'.
