Mum’s shock after smart meter told her she spent £40,000 in a single day

A woman couldn’t believe her smart meter when she checked it on Sunday morning and it informed her she had used £40,000 of electricity in one day.

The 25-year-old mum says her daily usage is rarely over £1.80, so she panicked when she saw the reading of £42,810.20. The reading for Saturday’s usage coincided with the energy price increase which came into force across the UK on October 1.

Chloee Miles Prior, who has a six-month-old daughter Athena, told The Mirror : "We don't sleep with all the lights on, we don't have an illegal rave going on, we're not doing anything that would actually justify that. "I suffer with anxiety and depression and everything and it sent me down that black hole for about half an hour before I could think about it with a rational head.
