Currently the conurbation houses 15pc of the UK’s asylum seekers, at more than 6,000. However in the coming weeks those who have been accommodated in hotels across the country during the pandemic will also be moved into housing - and of the 10,000 or so people in that position, leaders here say 3,000 are expected to be directly housed in the North West via outsourced government contracts.
