Michael van Gerwen ahead of the World Cup of Darts after the Green Machine was ruled out with a wrist injury.Van Gerwen has announced he has been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome – pressure on the nerves in the wrists which can cause tingling and numbness in the fingers and hand – and will undergo surgery the day after the Premier League play-offs in Berlin, shortly before the start of the World Cup in Frankfurt.The three-time world champion intends to be back to 100 per cent fitness in time for the World Matchplay in Blackpool, which starts on July 16.

Van Gerwen was due to partner Danny Noppert at the World Cup but his place will now go to Dirk van Duijvenbode, who has played at the tournament before, alongside MVG.Van Duijvenbode is a larger-than-life character, who is known for one of the most intense walk-ons in the sport.

The 30-year-old likes to sprint to the stage before gyrating to hardcore dance music in front of fans.Away from darts, he leads a more gentile life and has worked on an aubergine farm since the age of 15.

It’s a job he remains very passionate about, to such an extent he walked to the stage at the 2021 World Championship holding an aubergine.
