Wayne Rooney has backed Michael Carrick over his decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea.
Carrick raised eyebrows on Sunday as he chose to name the Portuguese star on the bench at Stamford Bridge, despite him having played a big role again in United’s win at Villarreal during the week.
Ronaldo opened the scoring in Spain as United secured their qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League in Carrick’s first game in charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.
It wasn’t enough to earn him a place in the starting XI against Chelsea though, with his omission proving to be a big talking point – not for the first time this season.
