Met Office issues brutal thunderstorm alerts after the weekend's soaring temperatures

The Met Office has predicted violent thunderstorms following Britain's balmy weather over the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering most of southern England and parts of South Wales, including Cardiff.Locations affected by thunderstorms remain uncertain, a few places may experience a combination of heavy rain, frequent lightning and hail.The national agency has said that there may also be "lightning strikes or hail" as the sudden turn in the weather could bring flooding.They've warned: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly."It comes after the country basked in highs of 23.5C over the glorious weekend temperatures.Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "Through next week we expect above-average temperatures, the mid- to high-20Cs is possible at times mainly towards the south-east if we see sunshine with this plume."But with those high temperatures, we could see showers or thunderstorms breaking out."It will be warm or perhaps very warm next week, and at times there will be outbreaks of rain."According to the Met Office, forecasts still predict that things will heat up over the coming days, with some areas reaching 27C.To stay up to date with all the latest news, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters here.Previous estimates have put Tuesday's (May 17) temperature as high as 26C – meaning Tuesday is likely to smash the record for the hottest day on record so far.Met Office spokesman Richard Miles said: "At the moment, Tuesday looks like being the warmest day of the week."Throughout the week, some people will enjoy warm sunny spells but heavy showers are set to move across the whole of the country,.
