Meghan Markle 'couldn't believe she wasn't paid for royal tours', claims new book

Meghan Markle was overheard saying that she 'couldn't believe' she wasn't getting paid to do royal tours, according to a new book.

In October 2018, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Australia for their first royal tour as a married couple. The pair also visited Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand and were thought to have gone down a treat with the locals at the time. Low make the claims in his upcoming book Courtiers: the Hidden Power Behind the Crown, set to be released on October 6 and serialised in The Times.The author notes how little acts of kindness such as bringing banana bread to the home of a farming family or visiting a school programme for young Aboriginals meant Meghan was "fêted as an inspirational role model".However, he says that several members of staff heard Meghan saying "I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this" on at least one occasion.

There were also allegations that staff were "treaty harshly". One source said that the former communications secretary to the couple - Jason Knauf - described the tour as "very challenging" and "made worse by the behaviour of the duchess".
