Valentine’s Day, avoid the expensive themed restaurant offerings and cook something special at home for your loved one. I’m not suggesting you go to a local farm and pick out a duck, but taking the time to work on a romantic menu says more than any novelty gift, or certainly flowers from the petrol station.Eating together is intimate and the dishes I’ve chosen here are designed for sharing.

Once you’re ready to serve, there’s no need for fiddly presentation, just a nice bottle and plenty of napkins…Is the fondue going to make a comeback?

You can have all sorts of fun with it – from this classic version to a luxury lobster thermidor fondue, dipping chunks of lobster or prawns into the rich sauce.I’ve been using spent gin botanicals to make this dish with goose and duck, but you may not have a friendly distillery nearby where you can call in a favour… so chop up some juniper, bay, cloves, dried orange peel and cardamom seeds, or whatever spices you fancy.This dish dates back to my days at Le Caprice, and I still give the simple recipe to customers to replicate at home.
