Cochrane will work alongside U23s manager Neil Wood and U18s boss Neil Ryan and will be tasked with maintaining a consistent style of coaching throughout United's youth ranks at the professional development phase.
The 39-year-old had been linked with the England U21 vacancy following Aidy Boothroyd's exit, but will instead return to coaching in club football having risen to prominence with Tottenham Hotspur.
