For eight seasons Ferguson could rely on an unflappable, almost unbeatable presence in goal. Peter Schmeichel is probably the best goalkeeper ever to play in the Premier League and he was United's rock throughout the 1990s.
Just the sight of the imposing Schmeichel in goal would strike fear into opposition forward and inject belief into the rest of the United team.
They could breathe easier when the big Dane was behind them, repelling all comers. Yet when Schmeichel left United it created a void that took Ferguson six years to fill.
