Erik ten Hag made it clear he didn’t want him in the dug-out. Phelan was a part of Ralf Rangnick ’s staff on match days last season, but has been sidelined following Ten Hag’s appointment as manager.
The Dutchman has brought in Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren as his assistant managers for the 2022/23 season. Rangnick’s coaches Chris Armas and Ewan Sharp and psychologist Sascha Lense have left Old Trafford along with the German, but Phelan’s position is yet to be clarified under the new regime.
However, The Athletic says the United hierarchy are ‘looking at whether a different kind of role is possible’ for the 59-year-old, who has given 21 years of service to the club.
Phelan played for United between 1989 and 1994 as a midfielder under Sir Alex Ferguson’s management. After starting a coaching career, he later returned to United to work with the reserves before joining Ferguson’s staff as an assistant coach between 2008 and 2013.Phelan went on to work at Norwich, Hull City and Central Coast Mariners in Australia before returning to Old Trafford to work with Solskjaer in 2019.
