Manchester City believe their decision not to pursue Harry Kane has been justified by the bargain signing of Erling Haaland, according to reports.City missed out on Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane last summer after refusing to meet the £160million asking price set by chairman Daniel Levy.

Nine months later and the Etihad side have signed one the most exciting forwards in world football for a shade of that price at just £51million, and according to The Sun chiefs at the Etihad are feeling relieved. The Premier League champions confirmed yesterday that they had reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the Norwegian superstar, 21.

Haaland's signing ends Pep Guardiola's search for a successor to Sergio Aguero. And it also represents a shrewd piece of business by City, with the club set to pay less than a third of what they were being quoted to sign England captain Kane last year.

Their patience has been rewarded, and they have not lost out in the meantime. Despite City's spectacular failure against Real Madrid in the Champions League, they're heavily odds-on to retain their Premier League title after Liverpool's costly slip up against Kane and Tottenham at the weekend.
