Chris Dodd, 27, is said to have 'encountered difficulties' in a pool at Triq it-Trunċiera, St Paul's Bay on Thursday at around 7.45pm, the Liverpool Echo reports.
Attempts were made to give him first aid before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital, where he sadly died, the Malta Police Force said.
