Local lockdowns will be a "recipe for chaos", the government has been warned, amid plans to bring back restrictions on places where there is a rise in infections.

Today Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, poured cold water on the idea, which was outlined yesterday by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Labour's Mr Burnham branded it a "recipe for chaos" and said Boris Johnson and co need to "regain a grip" on the crisis. Strengthening a tracking and tracing system - set to expand from next Monday - is the key to doing it safely, he said.
