Liverpool's recruitment team have been criticised by fans for missing out on a 'bargain' transfer on deadline day. The Reds had been linked with a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland as possible back-up for the injured Alisson.

But Butland, who had been valued at around £20million just 15 months ago, was sold to Crystal Palace for just £500,000. The transfer was so cheap because Butland's contract at Stoke was set to expire next summer, meaning he'd have been able to leave the club on a free.
