killer orcas helping to free a trapped humpback whale has been caught on video — despite the two species typically not getting on.The remarkable encounter was captured off the Western Australian south coast earlier this month and has since made its way around social media, with users freaking out about the wild encounter. The witnesses who experienced the magical moment initially 'feared the worst' when they saw pod of orcas swim towards the trapped whale, as orcas often feast on humpbacks in the ocean. However, they were quickly stunned when they realised it was actually a 'rescue' attempt by the group of orcas to save the humpback.
Gemma Sharp from Whale Watch Western Australia said: "It would usually be part of their diet so when we saw the injured humpback and the approaching orca, we were concerned."The trio of "rescue" orcas have been named, Hookfin, Blade and Matriarch Queen and were expected to eat the trapped whale - but incredibly, they all appeared to lose interest once the humpback was set free.
