Kate Middleton has "provided a sense of normalcy and stability" that Prince William "desperately needed," a royal expert has claimed.

Brittani Barger, the deputy editor of Royal Central, believes Kate is highly important to William in his preparation to be king.

It comes following years of reports that Prince Charles wants a slimmed-down monarchy, which has sparked concerns that he won't be as favoured as the monarch.

The Cambridge family were praised for their down-to-earth and comical moments during the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. It has been suggested that Prince William, who is set to celebrate his 40th birthday this week, could become the next king instead.Brittani Barger told the Daily Star: "Kate has been paramount in William's preparation for the future."As a commoner, her upbringing was quite different from his, and she's able to share experiences and things that he would not have normally known about."She added: "Being with her family also has provided him with stability."He's been able to live like a normal person when he's with them, which will benefit him as king and has benefited both him and Kate in their royal roles."They are more down-to-earth and in touch than previous generations."Nearly half of Brits believe the Prince of Wales should step aside in favour of his son, according to Ipsos who ran a poll for the Independent. The survey, which was conducted in April, revealed that 42 per cent responded in favour of William being next to take the throne. It was reported that just 24 per cent said Charles should not make way for William, while 29 per cent responded without any strong thoughts on the idea.
