The Bristol Rovers manager, 38, is accused of grabbing his wife Georgia Barton by the throat and kicking her in the head, Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court heard today.
The former midfielder played for teams including Manchester City, Newcastle, Queen’s Park Rangers and Marseille during his football career.
Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, denies a charge of assault by beating, which relates to an incident at a residential property in Kew, south-west London, on June 2 in which his wife suffered an injury to her head.
