St Mirren will give Ayr United the “utmost respect” this afternoon. That’s because manager Jim Goodwin knows they must not underestimate their Championship opponents otherwise they risk ending up on the wrong side of a Scottish Cup upset. The Buddies go into the clash as favourites, but Goodwin believes his side face a stern test at Somerset Park having watched today’s opponents topple Championship leaders Arbroath at the start of the month.Goodwin told Express Sport: “It’ll be an extremely difficult game against Ayr.“The result could go either way and it’s a 50-50 game as far as I’m concerned.“We will be the big favourites in a lot of peoples eyes and rightly so, being the Premiership team.“Any time you go to one of the teams in the lower divisions then you are expected to win.“But we all know from being in the game long enough that it doesn’t always pan out that way.“There’s no way in the world we will underestimate Ayr United.

They’ve got a new manager in with new ideas.“I went to see them a couple of weeks ago against Arbroath and they did really well and deservedly won the game.“Arbroath had a lot of possession, but Ayr were very difficult to break down and I expect them to set up in a similar fashion against us with 10 or 11 men all behind the ball.“We will give them the absolute utmost respect.”
