Tony Award-winning playwright J.T. Rogers knew why he wanted to be part of a TV series adaptation of Jake Adelstein’s time as a crime beat reporter in Japan.

It was easy. The pair had been best friends since they met in High School. For Ansel Elgort, playing Adelstein, the first non-Japanese staff writer at the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, was just part of the appeal.
