ITV series Endeavour axed after 10 years on air as writers confirm last series

ITV has announced it is axing its hit detective drama Endeavour after 10 years.The popular police show, which starred English actor Shaun Evans in the leading role of Inspector Morse, has run for eight series with a ninth in the works.Show producers Mammoth Screen, as well as writers Russell Lewis, Roger Allam and Shaun Evans, have mutually agreed to end the show, which means the ninth series shooting in Oxford will be the last.Executive Producer Damien Timmer said in a statement: "Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of TV."Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!

We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on and off screen, and to the show’s fans both in the U.K.

and abroad."The producer speaking for Mammoth Screen continued: "Russell has many surprises up his sleeve for the final three films, with the return of some familiar faces and new challenges for Endeavour and Thursday to face before the final goodbye!"The series first aired on ITV as a single film back in January 2012 to mark the 25th anniversary of Inspector Morse's TV debut.It was such a hit with audiences that 36 episodes will have been made in total by the time the show reaches its series nine conclusion.Endeavour is the third installment in the Inspector Morse trilogy, which originally ran from 1987 until 2000 before a spin-off, Lewis, ran from 2006 until 2015.The show also cast the likes of Roger Allam as DCI Fred Thursday, Morse's mentor, Sara Vickers (Joan Thursday), James Bradshaw (Dr Max DeBryn), and Anton.
