Italian man, 101, born during Spanish flu survives coronavirus as death toll rises

A 101-year-old Italian man has become one of the oldest people on record to survive coronavirus. The centenarian, who was born during the Spanish flu in 1919, was released from hospital in Rimini on Thursday according to Italian media.

It is the second pandemic the man has survived, according to the deputy mayor of Rimini Gloria Lisi, who referred to him as “Mr P”.

Italy has been one of the worst affected countries hit by coronavirus and the death toll has now surged to 10,023, after 889 people died in the past 24 hours.

The confirmed number of coronavirus cases reached 92,472 from 86,498 on Friday. Nearly 86 per cent of deaths among those with coronavirus have occurred in patients older than 70, according to Italy’s National Institute of
