A school has been criticised for refusing to let pupils attend without proof of a negative Covid test. Children classed as close contacts of someone who has tested positive have been told they need to show their negative lateral flow test when they arrive at Forest Gate Academy.

Parents have told the Manchester Evening News that families who don't agree with the daily testing have been forced to keep their children off from the school, which is in Partington, Trafford.

While it's the case that schools can request that tests be done, it is only advisory and the Department for Education has confirmed that its guidance states 'testing remains voluntary but is strongly encouraged'. A message to parents from the school said: "You must ensure LFDs are completed and a negative result is shown each morning before your child attends school." The mum of a Year 1 pupil told us: "My child is five years old.
