Family Collection of the late Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Patricia, up for auction on March 24 via Sotheby’s, may be light on jewellery, but there are a handful of treasures – and stories – to behold.
These pieces give us a tantalising glimpse into the personal adornments of the daughter of the First Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India, a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth and a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria.First, we can’t ignore one of the most beautiful legacies of Patricia’s collection, which has quite rightly stayed in the family – the Mountbatten Star Tiar, as worn by the late Countess’s daughter-in-law Penny Knatchbull on her wedding day in 1979, and most recently by Penny’s daughter Alexandra.
