A new coronavirus variant which has left scientists "worried" has been detected in the UK. Last week Public Health England (PHE) announced that dozens of cases of the Indian variant had been detected in the UK.
Yesterday a government minister downplayed the threat it poses to the UK population, noting that there is currently no evidence it spreads quicker or renders vaccines less effective.
Scientists have sounded a more cautionary note, with one warning that it could potentially do more damage than the South Africa variant.
Today Boris Johnson cancelled his trip to New Delhi which had been scheduled for next week as the coronavirus situation in India worsens.
