Topshop was poised to go into administration was a real shock, not because it hadn’t been on a decline for some years now, with cheaper online players giving it stiff competition, but because it seemed so sudden.
It is incredibly sad that a brand that was so iconic cannot survive any longer. The implications for the 13,000 store staff, who are mostly young women, the supply chain, and of course everyone at HQ are catastrophic.
It is the end of an era, but could it have been avoided with investment, foresight and strong management? It has always seemed odd to me that there are so many young female fashion brands being run by older men with little understanding of their customers’ demands.My guess is that one of the online brands like Boohoo.
