A former soldier who had his life changed forever in a horrific accident when he was just 21 is one of the first people in the world to have a full face transplant and admits it's like wearing someone else's face.

Mitch Hunter, 42, was left disfigured after a car he was in crashed into a pylon, which saw 10,000 volts of electricity plough through his body in 2001.Mitch absorbed the bulk of the electrical blast after pushing his female companion out of the way and endured unimaginable pain as the electricity travelled through his body and out his face.

The result was that Mitch was left devastatingly disfigured losing two fingers on his right hand, his left leg and his face, along with some of his memory just before and after the accident.Mitch also needed extensive skin grafts from other his leg and back, and only put himself forward for a face transplant after his wife got pregnant. Now a dad of three, Mitch, who lives in Indiana, has said that he initially had the facial operation as he didn't want his kids to be scared of his face.

As a result, 30 doctors spent over 14 hours reconstructing Mitch's face – replacing his nose and lips and reattaching facial muscles and nerves. And far from shying away from his injuries, Mitch has been extremely vocal on TikTok about his condition and helped to destigmatise face transplants.
