Some 26 athletes - many of whom knew Ron - formed a guard of honour as the hearse paused at Dukinfield Town Hall for a minute's silence for the icon who died on May 23, aged 82.

The cortege travelled from Ron's home in Joel Lane, Hyde, to the town hall where hundreds of people burst out in spontaneous applause before falling silent.

From there, the athletes joined the procession to Dukinfield Crematorium less than a mile away where there was a private family funeral.
