Ayrshire have cancelled elective surgeries amidst the highest Covid surge the health board has seen during the pandemic. NHS Ayrshire and Arran say they are operating under 'emergency planning conditions' as they deal with a sharp rise in hospital admissions due to COVID-19.

Health bosses took the decision last night to announce a number of cut backs which included elective surgeries being postponed until the end of the month.

Some outpatient services will also be suspended temporarily with a priority placed on cancer surgeries and diagnostic services.

The health board plan to redeploy staff to cover emergency care. Covid admissions to Ayrshire hospitals have risen by almost 38 per cent since the start of September.
