While there are nurseries that specialise in these (I like Penlan Perennials, which doesn’t use peat), a good old Google/Pinterest deepdive will give you a steer.If you’re starting from scratch and willing to throw money at it, you can’t do better than tree ferns, which will instantly add drama, height and interest – crucial in small, shady spaces.
A cheaper alternative is Fatsia japonica, which is tough as old boots, flowers in the dead of winter (great for those hungry bees) and will get big, fast.
