Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has not been going to plan. Humiliated in his initial push toward Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, Russia’s unhinged despot has refocused his efforts on the country’s east.
Eastern Ukraine is no stranger to violence - it's been the setting of slow and gritty trench warfare between the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed separatists since 2014.
Now though, the battle for Ukraine’s east, focused around the regions of Donbas and Luhansk, has stepped up a gear since the all-out invasion of February 2022.The heart of the fighting in recent days has been in the town of Sievierodonetsk, the battle for which Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said will determine the future of the Donbas.The war has been incredibly costly for both sides, with the death toll well into the thousands.Men, women and children, civilians and soldiers have all lost their lives and, in shocking numbers, so too have Russian colonels and generals.
On June 7 the Daily Mail reported that the 50th Russian colonel (senior field officers) had been killed during the fighting in Ukraine.
