United played well in the first-half and had two big chances to score but a Jan Bednarek header and an excellent James Ward-Prowse free-kick had Saints two goals to the good at the break.
In response, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer introduced Edinson Cavani at half-time in a bid to change the game and the Uruguayan played a part in all three of the visitors' goals in the second half.
