Those recently diagnosed in the UK are believed to have the milder west African variant. The virus gets its name from crab-eating laboratory macaque monkeys in 1958, who were observed to have developed pox.
Then 12 years later in 1970, the first human case of monkeypox was detected in Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the World Health Organisation, the case fatality rate of the milder strain that has spread globally, is around 3-6%.
This is compared to the more serious strain known to have a fatality rate of 10%.Monkeypox is usually transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected individual or animal.
