The Last of Us will take “more than one” season to adapt the video game’s sequel, The Last of Us: Part II. HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama was officially renewed for a second season in January, but its creators have revealed the events of Part II will span at least two seasons of television.

The Last of Us: Part II was released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, and is a far lengthier game than its 2013 predecessor. The Last of Us video game takes around 15 hours of playtime to complete, whereas Part II takes around 25 hours.

This is in part because the sequel follows two intertwining story lines, with more action, more set-pieces, and a host of new characters introduced.

As such, it was expected the TV show’s creators would need more than one season to encompass everything the game has to offer. READ MORE: Could The Last of Us happen in real life?
