Graham Norton plans to keep up a Eurovision tradition in tribute to Sir Terry Wogan

Graham Norton has encouraged Brits to withhold from drinking until song number nine has been performed at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

The five-time BAFTA TV Award winner, 59, is the UK's commentator for the yearly competition and has been following the same tradition throughout the years.Ensuring Brits are entertained with ongoing commentary throughout the spectacle, it became a tradition to raise a glass to Sir Terry Wogan during the ninth song of Eurovision following his death in 2016.Terry was the commentator on the popular competition from 1971 to 2008, which Graham then took over a year later.Speaking about if he has any traditions for this year's competition, Graham explained: "Not really."I make sure I've been to the toilet and only start drinking at song number nine, as Sir Terry decreed."The heart-warming tradition began in 2016 when Sir Terry died of cancer, aged 77.Graham added: "For those who aren't aware, song number nine is famous because Sir Terry always warned me not to have anything to drink until that point. "During song number nine this year, the host country, Sweden will be performing and I will be encouraging everyone to raise a glass."It has all worked out very nicely as Swedish people in the arena will be cheering their song in the stadium as everyone back in the UK will join me and say cheers to the memory and legacy of Sir Terry Wogan."For more of the latest showbiz news from Daily Star, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters hereThis year's Eurovision Song Contest is due to take place between May 10 and May 14.

The two Eurovision semi-finals will take place on Tuesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 12, at 8pm BST.The grand final will follow on Saturday, May 14, also starting at 8pm.
