WithChloé Zhao, Emerald Fennell and Regina King among this year's best directing nominees, Sunday will mark the first time the Golden Globes have ever recognized more than one female director in a single year.
During the E! red carpet preshow, King, nominated for her directorial debut,One Night in Miami, touched on the historic moment. "For a lot of us, it's bittersweet, the fact that it's 2021 and this is just happening and that this is the conversation," King told E!
host Karamo Brown. "I'm happy that it is a conversation, and I'm hoping that it remains a conversation — and I'm hoping that it's the beginning of actually feeling a true shift in recognizing just how many women that are powerful artists, storytellers and have stories to.
