The other girl made it to an island but was stranded with no way back over the broken ice in Clifton, Nottinghamshire, at around 4.45pm yesterday.
Police warned of the dangers and said "they could easily have drowned or suffered from hypothermia" if they hadn't been spotted by a passerby, Nottinghamshire Live reports.
