Harry Maguire sat out England's win over Croatia with the injury that kept him out of Manchester United's final fixtures of the season, but returned to training this week ahead of the Scotland clash.
Going into that game Maguire declared himself fit to play, while Gareth Southgate said the United captain would play some part.
However, when the teams were announced, Maguire was on the bench with Manchester City man John Stones and Tyrone Mings starting at centre-back.
