Gary Neville’s reply in itself was understated, just like the player in question. When asked during a quick fire Twitter Q&A on Wednesday afternoon to name the Premier League ’s most underrated player, the Manchester United legend pointed to a Liverpool star. “Wijnaldum,” he wrote, before adding in brackets: “maybe spelt wrong”.
Neville’s spelling was spot on, but the fact he was unsure summed up his point. Georginio Wijnaldum has often gone under the radar at Liverpool during a period of unprecedented success, and that has even applied as he nears an exit.
The 30-year-old Dutchman is out of contract this summer and, having failed to negotiate an extension, appears destined to depart for a new challenge elsewhere.
