Prince Andrew has decided to change its name to distance itself from the Duke of York and his ongoing civil sex case. Head of Prince Andrew High School, Craig Campbell, in Nova Scotia sent an email to families explaining the decision as he said it was "exciting news" for concerned parents. The email explained: "The name of a school should be reflective of our school community and uphold our values as a safe and inclusive learning space for all.“Our hope is to continue to build our identity as a positive, supportive and respectful community, with a name to match.” The school was named in honour of the Queen's son in 1960 after he was born but the name has been a point of concern since 2011 - when Andrew was accused of having sex with an underage girl trafficked by paedophile friend Jeffrey Epstein.
Officials in the school originally formed committees in 2019 to discuss a name change after the Duke of York was taken off royal duties, reports New York Post. The many allegations against him regarding his supposed links to Jeffery Epstein's sex trafficking ring sparked concerns for staff and parents despite his denial of any wrongdoing.
One mother of pupils at the school and chair of the school advisory council, Belinda Oxner, said in 2019: "As mother-of-three daughters, I find it very difficult to have that name on a building with the allegations and the associations now with the Prince Andrew name."The school will choose a new name in time ready for the new school year in September, the principal said.Mr Campbell added: "We’re ready and excited to take this next step."Representatives for Prince Andrew have been contacted regarding the announcement. It comes after the Queen stripped Andrew of his royal titles and patronages,.
