The defender had represented Les Bleus up until U21 level but, despite numerous call-ups to the senior squad, never made his international debut for the defending world champions.

Frustrated by his continued overlook, the 27-year-old made the decision to switch nations last month after being granted Spanish nationality status.

That came due to his eight years playing in Spain with Athletic Bilbao and he will be a part of the squad for the European Championship.
