This often happens when writers draw on the experiences of others and shape them into a narrative. Though she hadn’t asked to see the manuscript, Mum was dismayed by its publication.
I don’t remember her telling me this in any direct way, just as I don’t recall her telling me her reasons. I assumed it was because her family was poor and her father was violent, and she was of the generation who didn’t ‘wash their dirty linen in public’.The memoir was based on the lives of my grandparents in the East End in the first half of the 20th century.
