DreamWorks Animation has unveiled its newest animated feature, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, set for wide release via Universal on June 30th, and the roster of major names behind it.

Jordan Moreau Lana Condor, Toni Collette and Jane Fonda are playing a family of sea monster queens in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming film “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” Condor voices Ruby, “a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.” Collette plays her mother, who forbade Ruby from ever stepping foot in the water, and Fonda is her grandmother, from whom Ruby is destined to inherit the throne of the kraken queens. Here’s the logline: “Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water. But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Annie Murphy) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.”

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Room,” a stage version of the Oscar-winning movie, will no longer open on Broadway due to insufficient financing and the withdrawal of a lead producer. The production was scheduled to begin performances on April 3 at the James Earl Jones Theatre, but it has been postponed indefinitely. “Room,” which was in rehearsal, has shut down as of Thursday, March 16. “In the midst of our rehearsals we were informed by one of our lead producers that due to personal reasons, they did not intend to fulfill their obligations to the production,” said producer Hunter Arnold. “Since being notified, the rest of the producing team has exhausted all possible avenues to keep the show on track, but the narrow timeline and economic shortfall created by this series of events has proven to be insurmountable.”

Naman Ramachandran London-based Spring Films, producers of Oscar nominated and BAFTA-winning 2012 documentary “The Act of Killing,” has signed a joint venture and partnership agreement with U.S.-Europe media fund APX Group. The new venture, via which APX and Spring will invest in new productions over the next five years, will be based in London and owned equally. It will look to develop and produce new and breakthrough content. The parties also see this agreement as an opportunity to curate a library of content that will have the potential for global distribution. The board of directors of the joint venture will include two members each from APX Group and Spring Films.
