The reasons are not currently known, with issues arising earlier this evening, but the platforms appear to be back up and running.
An error message on Facebook read: "Sorry, something went wrong. "We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can." While Instagram said: "Oops, an error occurred." Independent outage monitor Down Detector registered a huge spike in Facebook down reports, with tens of thousands of reported issues.
