Formula 1 fans were wondering if they’d travelled back in time after seeing Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel at the top of the timesheets at the Canadian Grand Prix. The veteran pair, who memorably battled for the championship 10 years ago – with Vettel snatching a third consecutive title at the final round – used all of their experience during the third practice session at a rash-lashed Gilles Villeneuve circuit.
The drivers ran full wets for the majority of the hour-long session before conditions improved enough for intermediates to be fitted.
Such conditions often mix the field up, with the most skilful or experienced drivers usually rising to the top.And in the closing stages of the session, Alpine’s Alonso and Aston Martin’s Vettel were sitting one-two on the timesheets.“It was two old hands, Vettel vs Alonso trading fastest times for much of the season,” said Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle.Meanwhile, one fan tweeted: “Oh the Early 2010s” while another added: “The veterans showing the most bravery in the rain!
No surprise!”“2 GOATS in wet conditions always performs better,” said a third while a fourth wrote: “Those awesome days when it was more about driver’s ability than cars.”Sadly for those loving the dose of nostalgia, that wasn’t how it ended, with the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly popping into the second spot to separate the veteran duo, with Alonso first and Vettel third.
