Manchester United goalkeeper Paul Woolston said the cartilage in his injured hip was all "gone” when he was forced to hang up his gloves at the age of 23-years-old.Woolston tragically called time on his football career before it had even got started.

Despite two huge operations on his hip, which required “months and months” of rehabilitation and rest, Woolston decided enough was enough when the same “kebab skewer” like pain returned in his hip again.

The 23-year-old began his career at Newcastle United, who loaned him to Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth Town Spartans, and South Shields, before he departed the Magpies to join Manchester United in 2018.

However, his horrific injuries meant he was never able to really prove his mettle with the Red Devils. “They said the hip was not what it first looked like on the scans,” Woolston said to the Fozcast when asked about the verdict of his hip before his second operation. “There was a lot of dead cartilage, which had to be smoothed off and they said 'when you come in for the second operation we’ll continue with that and try and inject the stem cell to see if the hip gets back’.“They said it would not be what it was, but they would get it as close as it can be.” When asked as to the condition of the cartilage once they had investigated his hip more, Woolston solemnly said, “The cartilage was just gone…bone on bone.”Woolston went under the knife again in another bid to heal his hip and a footballing career which was spiralling out of control.
